The Festival of Lights in Lyon: A Magical and Radiant Tradition

Table des matières

Every year, Lyon lights up to celebrate a unique tradition deeply rooted in its history: the Festival of Lights. The year 2024 is particularly special, marking the 25th anniversary of this iconic event in its modern form.

The origins of the Festival of Lights date back to 1852, when the city of Lyon sought to thank the Virgin Mary for her protection against the plague. The tradition began with a significant event: the installation of the Virgin’s statue on Fourvière Hill. Initially scheduled for September 8, the inauguration was delayed by a flood, preventing the completion of the work. When the statue was finally installed, the relieved citizens lit candles in their windows as a gesture of gratitude. Since then, every December 8, this tradition continues, illuminating the city with thousands of small candles.

The festival gained new significance in 1944, when, after the Liberation of Lyon, its citizens expressed their gratitude by lighting candles in honor of the Virgin. This gesture was accompanied by a symbolic event: cannon shots fired from Fourvière Hill every September 8 to commemorate the city’s vow to thank Mary for her protection. Over the years, Lyon has maintained this vow, reflecting the strong ties between the city, its faith, and its traditions.

During this period, Lyon is abuzz with excitement. Residents and visitors flock to see luminous art installations projected onto iconic landmarks and squares, such as the Basilica of Fourvière and Place des Terreaux. This year, several standout installations from previous editions will make a grand return, delighting locals and tourists alike.
